The Chamber of
Mines of the Philippines is an association
advancing the interest of mining, quarrying and
mineral processing companies for the efficient
exploration, development and utilization of
minerals in consonance with sound economic,
environmental and social policies. The
association consists of members coming from
exploration, mining, mineral processing and
service industries including other professional
associations. The members are united by a shared
commitment to the principles of economic growth,
sustainable development and as government's
partners in development.
The Chamber of Mines of the
Philippines was first organized in 1936 and was revived in 1949.
With the consolidation of the Gold Producers Association and the
Base metals Association, it was organized as a non-stock,
non-profit corporation on 4 September 1975 . Since then, it has
become the premiere business voice of the mining industry,
playing a leading role in shaping the mining industry's response
to the challenges of sustainable development.
PURPOSE
The Purpose of the Chamber of Mines is to serve as a lobby group
for the mining industry. It actively supports legislation in
support of mining as well as prepares analyses and position
papers and submits these to Congress, the Office of the
President and other concerned Government Agencies. It continues
to be a consistent and vigilant spokesperson for the mining
industry
OBJECTIVES
BUSINESS LEADERSHIP – To be the leading advocate on
issues connected with the sustainable development of the mining
and minerals industry.
POLICY DEVELOPMENT – To participate in policy development
in order to create and investment environment that will allow
the mining industry to effectively contribute to national
development.
MINING ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT – To demonstrate progress
in environmental and mineral resource management and to share
best practices among members.
INFORMATION EDUCATION ADVOCACY – To advocate the
importance of the mining industry to national development and to
anticipate future changes leading to its economic
sustainability.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY - to develop CSR
standards by which compliance and progress can be gauged and
monitored.
NETWORK – To contribute through international and
national networks to a sustainable future for the mining
industry.
PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines conducts mining
workshops, conferences and exhibits for the purpose of
disseminating, clarifying and forging closer relationships with
all sectors of Philippine society.
The Chamber represents its various members in their dealings
with various Government agencies such as the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of
Trade and Industry (DTI), the Mines and Geosciences Bureau
(MGB), National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), Board
of Investments (BOI) and others.
ACTIVITY OUTPUTS
· Lead institution responsible for important amendments to
mining laws and regulations;
· Supports and actively promotes industry “Best Practices” in
the exploitation, development, mining and processing of
minerals;
· Dialogues with various sectors of Philippine society to
promote better awareness and understanding of the role of mining
in nation-building;
Currently, the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines is the
Chairman and Secretariat of the ASEAN Federation of Mining
Associations (AFMA) for the year 2004-2005.
